Privacy Policy
EFFECTIVE: MAY 25, 2026
What Year Games ("we", "us", "our") respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have when you use What Year Music at https://whatyeargames.com (the "Service").
1. Information We Collect
- Player name — A nickname you choose when you submit a score. Shown publicly on leaderboards. Do not use real or identifying names.
- Device identifier — A random ID generated and stored locally in your browser. Used to track personal-best scores, PRO subscription status, and prevent duplicate name claims. It is not tied to your real identity.
- Gameplay data — Scores, accuracy, decade selection, and timestamps, used to populate leaderboards and statistics.
- Payment data — Handled entirely by Stripe, our PCI- compliant payment processor. We never see or store your full credit card number. Stripe shares a transaction reference and subscription status with us so we can grant PRO access.
- Push notification tokens — If you opt in to push notifications, we store the browser-issued subscription token so we can send you Daily Challenge reminders. You can revoke this anytime in your browser settings.
- Technical data — Standard server logs (IP address, user agent, request paths, timestamps) are collected for security and debugging.
2. How We Use Information
- Operate the game and display leaderboards
- Process PRO subscription payments via Stripe
- Send push notifications you've opted in to receive
- Detect abuse and protect the integrity of leaderboards
- Improve features and fix bugs
3. Sharing & Third-Party Services
We do not sell your data. We share limited data with:
- Stripe — to process payments. Stripe's privacy policy: stripe.com/privacy
- Web Push providers (e.g., Apple, Google, Mozilla) — to deliver browser notifications, only if you opt in.
- Hosting & infrastructure providers — to operate the Service.
We may disclose information if required by law or to protect rights, safety, and property.
4. Cookies & Local Storage
We use your browser's local storage (not cookies) to remember your device identifier, player name, sound preference, and PRO subscription status. Clearing your browser data will reset these values. Stripe's checkout pages use cookies as described in its policy.
5. Your Choices
- Delete your data: email us at contact@whatyeargames.com from the same email address used for your Stripe purchase (if applicable), or include your player name + approximate purchase date. We will delete your leaderboard entries and PRO record within 30 days.
- Stop push notifications: revoke notification permission in your browser/OS settings.
- Cancel subscription: use the Stripe customer portal link in your purchase confirmation email or contact us.
6. Children
The Service is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
7. Data Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your data, including HTTPS for all traffic and minimal data collection. No system is 100% secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Data Retention
We retain gameplay and leaderboard data indefinitely to maintain historic leaderboards. Push subscription tokens are deleted when the browser revokes them. Payment records are retained per Stripe's policy and tax/legal requirements (typically 7 years).
9. International Users
The Service is operated from the United States. By using it from outside the United States, you consent to the transfer of your information to the United States.
10. Changes
We may update this Policy. Material changes will be announced on the Service.
